Abstracting for educational management and indexing of controlled vocabulary.
Cygnus provided data entry services for bibliographic, index, and catalog information for the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, George Washington University. This included approximately 700 original abstracts per year of books and unpublished research reports in the area of educational management per the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Processing Manual for input into ERIC's Resources in Education.
We also provided appropriate indexing for all records using the controlled vocabulary found in the ERIC Thesaurus of Descriptors; maintained a separate indexing thesaurus file of terms not found in the Thesaurus of Descriptors but necessary to provide complete indexing of articles, and possibly useful as future ERIC descriptors; provided complete, formatted records ready for integration into ERIC's Resources in Education; and developed and maintained the educational management sub-file of the ERIC databases.
ERIC is an online library of education research and information, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the Department of Education. It provides the public with a centralized web site for searching the ERIC collection and submitting materials to be considered for inclusion in the collection. Users can also access the collection through commercial database vendors, statewide and institutional networks, and Internet search engines. To help users find the information they are seeking, ERIC produces a controlled vocabulary, the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors. This is a carefully selected list of education-related words and phrases used to tag materials by subject and make them easier to retrieve through a search.
