Dorota Ponikiewska, M.L.S.

Ms. Ponikiewska, as the Director of Librarianship Services for Cygnus, has led innovative consumer health and biomedical librarianship and information support initiatives for a range of federal and private sector clients for more than two decades. Ms. Ponikiewska has years of high-level managerial and project experience as a Librarian of health information used worldwide by consumers, practitioners, researchers, and key health organizations such as the National Library of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Her veteran management and daily project expertise ensures the success of Cygnus’ objectives and the fulfillment of our client’s critical goals and mission.  She is an expert in biomedical information collection, organization, preservation, dissemination, and content development, having extensive experience in the development and maintenance of both scientific and medical databases. 

Ms. Ponikiewska is currently responsible for leading the work of Cygnus’ scientific professionals and Medical Librarians, most whom hold advanced degrees in biomedical fields, and many with fluency in multiple foreign languages; they provide subject analysis, abstracting, and indexing services for scientific databases. Ms. Ponikiewska also has years of experience overseeing a number of other consumer and scientific research abstracting and indexing contracts, including those for the U.S. Department of Education’s National Clearinghouse on English Language Acquisition, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the American Psychological Association.

She served as the Librarian and Database Administrator in charge of developing the Complementary and Alternative Medicine subfile of the Combined Health Information Database for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Clearinghouse. In addition, her experience includes her roles as an Advisor on the CDC’s Surgeon General’s Reports on Smoking Health and Project Director on the Pandemic Influenza Digital Archive Project for the NIH Library.

Fluent in Polish, Russian, and Spanish, Ms. Ponikiewska is a member of the American Library Association (ALA), Special Library Association (SLP), and the American Society of Indexers (ASI). She received her M.L.S. in Library Science from the University of Maryland and her B.S. in Humanities and History from Gdansk University, Poland.
